What are the first things that come to mind when you think of summer? For me, it's all about ice cream cones, fireflies, outdoor movies and fireworks. I dream of hot dogs, sundresses, freckles, and long European vacations. But, most of all, when I think of summer, I think of New England! My first professional baseball game was at Fenway Park, in Boston, on my 8th grade class trip. Every weekend in my 20s, was spent on Cape Cod, boating, eating fried seafood, dancing in Hyannis, and playing bocce on the beach. In my 30s I spent magical weekends in Nantucket, Massachusetts & in Kennebunkport, Maine. I've road-tripped through New Hampshire, had Ben and Jerry's in Vermont and seen the Mansions in Newport, RI. I have been to Boston more times than I can count and love all things blue & white striped and adorned with an anchor. I dream of blueberries, Hydrangea bushes and lobster rolls. To me, Summer = New England.
You can imagine my excitement, when our friends Bryan and Megan, invited us to Boston to stay with them for a weekend. Our friends belong to a sailing club, live in the Italian end of town, have an outdoor patio, and are really good hosts. I bought my plane ticket before I even asked Matt if he wanted to go.
Our perfect weekend started with sangria and brunch along the river in the Boston Seaport. The weather was hot, the sun was shining, and we were in really good moods, despite our 6am flights. Our tour of the Seaport continued and we had the first of many Sam Adams Summer Ales at The Barking Crab. The place was packed but the beer was flowing and the fried seafood smelled like heaven. A highlight of the day was our ferry ride to Spectacle Island, where we drank wine and played Rummikub. To stretch our legs, we walked the circumference of the island and watched the sailboat races in the distance.
After a shower (it was HOT on Spectacle Island) and a bit of relaxation, we headed to dinner, which included oysters, charcuterie, and grilled octopus. After dinner drinks turned into midnight binging at the 24 hour Italian bakeries. Saturday was a good day.
On Sunday, we went sailing and Bryan was a very impressive captain. The city skyline views were incredible and the flightpath into Logan airport was right above us, which was an airline girls' dream. We adjusted to life back on land while eating $1 oysters and drinking cocktails along the Boston Harbor. We had dinner on Bryan and Megan's back patio, complete with tri-tip steak, full lobster, & corn on the cob straight off the grill. We drank wine under the stars and recapped our very preppy weekend. We knew the weekend had come to an end when we saw a giant rat run across the patio towards our lobster shells. Yup, a perfect ending to a perfect Boston weekend.
Summer 2018 has just been validated. Thank you, New England!
