The first kiss hadn't happened yet, but we were already starting to feel like more than friends. During those magical first couple weeks between friendship and dating, we took a trip with 10 of our closest friends to Honolulu Hawaii. The flight from PHX to HNL is only about 6 hours, so it was the perfect exotic destination for a weekend trip with friends.
I'll admit, most of the trip was spent lounging on the beach during the day and partying in the bars at night, but we did manage to sneak a couple touristy things into our itinerary. Two of Honolulu's most famous attractions are Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head State Monument. We stopped drinking long enough to check these attractions off our to-do list.
The hike up Diamond Head gets your blood pumping, but is doable in running shoes and a bottle of water. The hike itself only takes about 45 minutes, but we took much longer to stop often and admire the view. Honolulu is such a unique city in the fact that it has a major city skyline and some really impressive beaches, right on top of each other. Oahu may not be the most picturesque of the Hawaiian Islands, but I thought the views were pretty darn perfect.
Pearl Harbor is a must do if in Honolulu, even if you don't participate in all the variety of events and tours. We happened to be there over Easter weekend and could only see a small part of the monument. We were able to see parts of the ruin and the atmosphere felt charged with American history.
We'll consult the Pearl Harbor website and a chose a package next time, but in the meantime, we always have Ben Affleck and Kate Beckinsale.
Other fun touristy HNL activities include:
Laniakea Beach (Turtle Beach)
Referring to the rest of Hawaii, we spent a glorious 10 days in Maui for our friends' wedding and I've been back to Maui a couple of times since then, but we really need to step up our Hawaii game. The islands are calling.
xoxo,
Erin
