Saturday
Start your morning with a better-than-most breakfast sandwich at the oh-so-popular Eggslut in Grand Central Market. The market has over 35 food vendors, all perfectly located in the heart of DTLA. Walk around and see what catches your eye as there are food stalls from around the globe in this one location. We tried bites of tacos, bbq, sandwiches, and dessert, but what we really came for was the world famous Eggslut breakfast sandwich. Perfectly soft buttery bun with classically cooked eggs & cheese made breakfast dreams came true that day!
You'll visit GCM early to avoid the long lines, so there is still plenty of morning left to check the Farmer's Market LA off your to-do list. The market is filled with booths of fruits & vegetables, homemade goods, clothing, toys, housewares, and everything else under the sun. Grab lunch at the market as there are quite a few restaurants and food vendors. We ate tacos, of course, we were in Southern California! I bought a sun hat to protect my face from the hot California sun and to this day, it's still one of my vacation staples. Matt and I love a good farmer's market and this one was five-star.
Your afternoon activity will involve a trip out to the cutest LA neighborhood, Silver Lake. This area of the city sits next to Echo Lake, a beautiful neighborhood with a park, lake, swan paddle boats, open green spaces, and plenty to see and do. If you have more time, I recommend spending part of your day right here! Today's agenda includes Silver Lakes's cute shops, restaurants, and my favorite, the Secret Stairs. You were up early so grab a caffeine fix at Alfred's. I was obsessed with the signature floral wallpaper and neon coffee sign. Alfred created the saying "But First Coffee"! One of the best candy bar companies, Compartes, even has an Alfred colored coded bar that we tried and loved. All around great stop on your tour of the neighborhood.
Walking around the neighborhood, it was easy to find the quirky secret stairs. There are also some really enjoyable art murals around the hood. Spend some time snapping pictures. The area isn't very touristy so we had no problem getting clean shots without other people blocking our frame.
After all that walking and shopping, you'll be hungry, so for dinner, head to one of my all-time favorite restaurants, Bestia. The Italian menu is packed with comfort classics as well as innovative takes on the basics. We ordered way too much food but ate every bite, including drinks & dessert. Bestia is at the top of my "best place I ever ate" list (see another favorite in Denver). To add to the ambiance, they were playing 90s west coast rap, and my cocktail was described as Strawberry Quik.
Sunday
Hopefully you slept well because today is another busy day. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and brunch doesn't get much better than inside a greenhouse, in a hip hotel, in a cool neighborhood. When we visited The Line, the restaurant was called The Commissary, but it has since changed to OpenAire and looks every bit as wonderful. The hotel is located in Koreatown and there are so many cool things to see in the neighborhood. Walk around for a bit and then check in for your reservation up on the pool patio of the hotel.
Next walk around Hollywood and visit all the typical tourist attractions. I love to find my favorite celebrities on the walk of fame and admire the Hollywood sign from afar. One of the best places to see the Hollywood sign, and other stunning view of the city, is from Griffith Observatory. The observatory sits on the mountains in Griffith Park and is a favorite of tourist and locals. Spend the afternoon inside and outside the observatory and check out their website for events when you're in town.
For drinks back in DTLA, we like the rooftop restaurant, Takami, for it's fancy drinks and gorgeous city view. The Japanese snacks are perfect for a little pre-dinner il aperitivo.
Dinner is at one of our other all-time favorites, Broken Spanish. The food is so darn good. Try the heirloom corn tortillas, chili rellenos, and the grilled octopus. You can't go wrong with any of the festively embellished cocktails.
