California dreaming: Aptos and Santa Cruz

Before I ever visited California, the image I had in my mind of the entire state, is basically Santa Cruz.  I pictured boardwalk piers, miles and miles of sandy beaches filled with beach glass and shells, breakfast burritos, whale watching, and gorgeous sunsets.  I love the major cities as much as the next person, but when I finally did visit Santa Cruz and the surrounding beach towns, I was smitten.  This was the California of my dreams!

It helps that our good friends live in the area, got married in the area, and frequently invite us back to visit.  Getting the feel of a town alongside a local, is what truly makes me feel like I've experienced a community.  Below are some typical activities we do when we're in town with our friends.

Morning Beach Walk in Aptos

While most of the fun occurs along the seashore, not all play has to take place by the water.  Equinox is a darling winery with so many delicious sparkling wines.  Followed by beer tasting and the best fries I've ever had (covered in garlic and feta) at Beer Thirty.

Midday Wineries & Breweries in Santa Cruz

A sunset boat cruise is always a good idea, but if you can add whale watching to the experience, you're in for a real treat.  On this particular cruise we saw numerous blue and humpback whales as they are the most dominant in the area.  Luckily, whale watching season is almost the entire year in California, so you should had this to your Saturday activities, all year round.

Hope you enjoy Santa Cruz and Aptos as much as we do!
