One of our favorite Saturday activities, is hoping the ferry at LIC Landing, and heading down the Brooklyn Coast. We pass Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Navy Yard, and then hop off at Dumbo (down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass) for some food and drinks. The ferry ride itself, is one of my favorite activities. For the cost of a subway ride, you can be on a boat on the open water with gorgeous Manhattan skyline views. Cruising under the bridges is a whole new experience vs walking across or viewing from the shore.
Hang out in Brooklyn Bridge Park, overlooking the East River. There is plenty of green space and walking trails so you can be as relaxed or active as you like. When you're ready for a bite to eat, some of the most fun restaurants include The Osprey (American classics in the 1 Hotel), Shake Shack, and Juliana's (pizza by Patsy Grimaldi). There are fancier dinner options as well, but we're usually just hanging out during the day.
Head towards Brooklyn Heights long the Greenway Terrace. This is one of my favorite stretches along the East River. Obviously the views of Manhattan are beautiful, but I also love seeing the activity at each of the piers. There are soccer fields, basketball courts, water parks, picnic areas, and so much more. The area is a hub of excitement on a hot summer day. You don't need a yard in the city. The city is your playground! Speaking of hot summer days, don't forget to get ice cream at Ample Hills Creamery on Pier 5. The walk back towards Dumbo, to catch the ferry, is pretty spectacular at sunset.
Happy Summer!
