Just a hop, skip, and sit in traffic for 4 hours, from NYC, is magnificent Montauk. The most eastern tip of New York State, but also known as the "End of the World". This region of Long Island's East Hampton, is quiet, laid back, and has that New England summer vibe that I love so much.
The area has become a bit more built up since we were there last, but regulations prevent massive development, so it's comforting to know that this resplendent beach town isn't going to change too quickly.
Our first visit to Montauk was to celebrate a friend's 30th birthday, so our nights were spent dancing at The Sloppy Tuna, or drinking around bonfires on the beach. Beach goers are known for sending wishes out into the universe via lighted lanterns. It's quite a sight to behold at the end of lazy beach day.
Need a change of scenery, head to the eastern most tip of Montauk and see one of the oldest light houses in The United States, Montauk Point Lighthouse. Explore the state park surrounding the lighthouse and savor in the history.
With all that history out of the way, head back to the beach for some reading and lemonade. The Montauk pace is slow and leisurely so embrace the pace!
Hungry after all that laying around? Grab a bite at a few of the best restaurants on the island. Some of our favorites include Navy Beach, Joni's Kitchen, Coffee and Flowers, and Tacombi, but on this trip, we decided to stick close to the group and gorge ourselves on Red Hook lobster rolls.
Some great dinner options include The Crow's Nest, The Surf Lodge, Duryea's Lobster Deck and Scarpetta Beach.
When you're vacationing at the end of the world, you'd expect great sunsets, and Montauk does not disappoint. While I'm always a fan of sunsets over the ocean, we were thrilled to see the most stunning sunsets from our lodging, over Fort Pond.
No birthday party is complete, without a sloppy night out at The Sloppy Tuna. While it's not really my scene now days, we had a really good time dancing to Taylor Swift. I'll never complain about that :)
A daily weekend activity for Matt and me, whether we're home or traveling, is beer tasting at local breweries. We didn't hit up Montauk Brewing Co on our last trip, but since it's become a vacation staple for us, I'm sure it will be at the top of our list next time. Similarly, I don't think The Surf Lodge was around when we visited, but ever since I started following them on Instagram, I've been dreaming of sipping rose on their patio and listening to live music on Sunday nights. Maybe next time!
I <3 NY
