Happy 30th Birthday Matt! Okay, this trip was a "few" years ago, but as we prepare to celebrate Matt's 37th birthday, I enjoy looking back on the birthday trips of the past. Last year we celebrated in Fort Lauderdale. Our first year together was spend in St. Maarten, and then on a cruise to Mexico. Summer birthdays are quite enjoyable!
First things first, we headed to the pool! Lounge chairs, endless amounts of books & magazines, palm trees swaying in the wind, waiters bringing frothy cocktails...we were in heaven. With our only movement coming from trips to the cabana bar or treading water in the pool, this is where we spent all day.
Coming from Atlanta (Matt) & Chicago (Erin), we met up in SJU and headed to the beachside hotel for poolside cocktails and sunbathing on the shore. The main goal was relaxation, as we'd been to the touristy areas of Puerto Rico numerous times before. We appreciate exploring and history lessons as much as the next tourist, but Matt really needed some sunshine and R&R. Our city view hotel room was a great jumping off point for a leisurely vacation!
As luck would have it, on Matt's actual birthday, it was a terrible storm and the rain didn't let up the entire day. We read books in the room, had a drink on the drenched patio bar, and even made up a game of balloon volleyball over our bed :) It was not ideal, to say the least. We took a cab to dinner and recorded how flooded the streets were...it was nuts! The food was delicious and Matt was a good sport about the crappy day.
As Annie says, the sun will come out tomorrow! Our last day was gorgeous and we were able to take advantage of the beautiful coastline. Whether the Caribbean or the Atlantic side of the island, you can't go wrong with the Puerto Rico beaches. Happy Birthday Matt!
