a little Brooklyn in l i c

One of the best things about New York City is that it offers something for everyone.  You can find anything you want at any hour of the day, even if it seems impossible.  And this including fresh-grown produce!  There are a variety of farmers markets in each borough, where you can fill your basket with fresh produce from nearby farms on Long Island or up the Hudson River.  But what if you want to see the vegetables in the ground and actually watch the farmer pick the fruit?  Like everything in NYC, that is possible, even in a concrete jungle.

Brooklyn Grange includes the largest rooftop farm in the world and creates one hundred thousand pounds of organic produce each year.  They provide a number of ecosystems, urban farming consultations for clients, and keep bees happy and healthy all over the city.  Brooklyn Grange has a number of locations, but we're partial to the one located basically in our own backyard in LIC.  Just a few minutes walk from our apartment, we can enter the random, seemingly abandoned warehouse, take the elevator to the roof, and wow.  There are gorgeous city skyline views, beautiful blue sky, and gardens loaded with fresh produce.  Buy your groceries and then stay to enjoy a picnic on the rooftop.  Not bad for an hour long excursion on a Summer Saturday.  Visit June through October, Saturdays, from 10am - 4pm.

Where is your favorite place to get fresh grown produce in the city?  And yes, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's count.  Haha.
