an afternoon in Millennium Park

An Afternoon in Millennium Park Chicago

A day in Millennium Park is the best way to show out-of-town guests downtown Chicago.  Start with lunch at Portofino on the water, then walk along the river, stopping for drinks at City Winery, & finally admire the architecture as you head south on Michigan Ave.  The entrance to Millennium Park is grand and beautiful.  If you visit in the Spring, the tulips in the park are some of the best in the city.  Head up the stairs to see the star of the show, The Bean (aka Cloud Gate).  Take a picture of your reflection and the reflection of the city.  Crawl underneath for a kaleidoscope view.  If you're hot from all that walking, next dip your toes into Crown Fountain.  The interactive video sculptures appear to spit water and kids go crazy when it happens.  Head further into the park and check out Jay Pritzker Pavilion.  The pavilion is impressive on its own, but on weeknights in the summer, you can catch an outdoor movie screening or a live classical music concert.  Most event are BYOB and residents crowd the grass area with picnic blankets and packed coolers.  It's one of my favorite things to do during a Chicago summer.

Lurie Garden and The Art Institute of Chicago

Facing the pavilion is the entrance to the Lurie Garden, my favorite spot in the park.  I often wandered the gardens on my lunch break from work, but it's even better when you are not rushed.  Meander through the pathways and admire the beautiful flowers and the city skyline.  The gardens bloom throughout the seasons and there is something lovely to see at all times of the year.  Follow the pedestrian walkway across the street to the Art Institute of Chicago.  The art museum is incredible and houses some of my all time favorite Impressionist Paintings.  See my tour of the Art Institute in the linked post.

Cindy's Rooftop

If you have more time to explore, continue to the rest of Grant Park including the BP Pedestrian Bridge, Maggie Daley Park, Buckingham Fountain, the North & South Rose Gardens, Monroe Harbor, the Formal Gardens, all the various sculpture parks and statues throughout the park.  Spend a humid summer day or a cold winter day at museum campus - home to the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, and Adler Planetarium.  All are award winning and fantastic facilities.  If you decide your tour stops at Millennium Park, walk across Michigan Ave to Cindy's rooftop.  Located at the top of the Athletic Association Hotel, Cindy's offers stunning view of Millennium Park and Lake Michigan.  Enjoy a family style meal inside and rose on the patio outside.  The perfect ending to your afternoon in Millennium Park.

I love Chicago!
