Garfield Park Conservatory
One of my favorite quotes is from the post-impressionism & Fauvism artist, Henri Matisse, "There are always flowers for those that want to see them". This quote rings true, even in the dead of winter in Chicago. If you need some warmth and a dose of nature, head to the Garfield Park Conservatory.
Hop off the train at Conservatory / Central Park Drive and head inside the bright & warm conservatory. Winter is my favorite time to visit since you instantly feel transported to another world. There are various garden rooms to explore, each as interesting and fascinating as the last. The Palm House is the largest room and where you will achieve your tropical weather fix. The Fern Room is imagined to resemble Illinois millions of years ago in the age of the dinosaurs. The Desert House reminds me of my time living in Phoenix and I'm instantly transported to the dry desert landscape of AZ. The Aroid House is picture perfect with it's lily pond and large glass lily pad sculptures. Also take note of all the house plants you are drawn to. You can buy them tomorrow at Home Depot and relive your conservatory dreams at home. Horticulture Hall includes the famous Moroccan water fountain, as well as a variety of plants and flowers to enjoy while you take a seat and rest your feet. The star of the show is The Show House (naturally). Here is a rotating display of season appropriate flowers and greenery, most of which are specifically grown in the conservatory. Come back again and again to see your favorites and include various times of year to witness the changing displays in The Show House. If you're visiting in the warmer months, don't forget to explore the outdoor gardens as well. There are always flowers for those that want to see them, inside and outside!
To see a few of my other favorite conservatories, check out Lincoln Park Conservatory and the Highland Park Conservatory.
