Even before I started working for the airlines, and at a time when I had only been to a smattering of states, I have always had a bucket list dream to visit all 50 states. I'm only a handful of states away from completing this goal, but for some reason have been stuck for the past few years (Covid's travel bans and quitting my job didn't help!) Back in the early 2000s, I was able to scratch West Virginia off my list with a white water rafting trip with some friends from DC & Boston. We met up in DC and drove to WV with the sole purpose of cruising the Shenandoah River on an inflatable raft. It was calm and pleasurable for a majority of the time, but we did experience some extremely scary rapids. My most vivid memory of the trip was me screaming and holding on for dear life instead of paddling through the class 4 rapids. The guide kept yelling for us to continue paddling, in order to exit the rapids, or we would flip over. A comment that made me scream even more, but did in fact get me to paddle again. Whoa, what an experience. One of those things I'm so glad I tried, but will never do again. haha. God bless West Virginia. At least it was pretty.
