The city of Tombstone began, in the late 1800s, as a silver mining town in southern Arizona. Tensions grew between the mining capitalists and the townspeople as the city expanded and matured. Things became even more tricky when a group of regional outlaws, The Cowboys, started stealing cattle from the local ranchers. Enter Doc Holiday and the Earp Brothers, Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan, ready to take these tensions to a head. While the city has a long and rich history and continues to make contributions to this day, we visited Tombstone for one reason only, to see Wyatt Earp and the reenactment of the shooting at the O.K. Corral.
After watching the reenactment and taking advantage of photo ops with the actors, we spent some time living out our dreams of the old Wild Wild West. The O.K Corral also offers stables, with real horse and buggy, a black smith house, a boarding house with Doc Holiday's room, as well as a cowboy bunkhouse. Matt was thrilled to show off his rodeo skills!
Grab lunch at Big Nose Kate's Saloon or Puny John's BBQ and make a day of history and that Arizona scenery. A three hour drive from Phoenix, it's a perfect day trip or stop overnight and include a day in Tucson. On our way back from Tombstone, we stopped at one of the various emu and alpaca farms. Matt, feeding the animals, and me, taking pictures and being generally terrified. Arizona is such a weird yet cool place :)
