christmas in nyc: West Village & Flat Iron

Not nearly as quiet as Lower Manhattan, but not quite as hectic as Midtown, this area of NYC has a little bit of Christmas magic for everyone.  Whether you photograph the beautiful brownstones of the West Village, visit Santa at the original Macy's or compare the Christmas Trees in the neighborhood parks, you will find your holiday spirit in one of our favorite regions of Manhattan.

Best holiday magic in NYC #3:  Chelsea Market

We spent a lot of time at Chelsea Market when Matt's office was located on one of the upper floors of the building.  Cute gift shops & a plethora of restaurants fill the space, but I was obsessed with the pink trees from 2021.

Best holiday magic in NYC #4:  Union Square Holiday Market and The Strand Bookstore

The biggest holiday market in the city, Union Square Holiday Market is like being in Europe for Christmas.  If you visit on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday, you'll also be able to shop winter produce and florals at the yearly Unions Square Green Market.  Head across the street to Whole Foods and you'll get a bird's eye view of the entire park.

Best holiday magic in NYC #5:  West Village

In any season, the shops, brownstones, and restaurants of the West Village are story book quality.  It is my favorite neighborhood in the entire city to wander around and grab something to eat.  Add holiday décor to the gorgeous facades, and the West Village is a perfect place to spend a December afternoon.

Best holiday magic in NYC #6:  Washington Square Park

A gorgeous setting for a NYC Christmas tree, Washington Square Park is beautiful during the day or at  dusk.

Best holiday magic in NYC #7:  Madison Square Park & Eataly

One of my favorite parks in the city, the one I visit most frequently, is Madison Square Park.  My brother and I often meet here since it's off my train line and only a few blocks from his office.  The park is under construction this 2022 holiday season, but the entire Flat Iron area does a wonderful job of getting visitors into the holiday spirit.  Last year, 2021, my brother & I met up for a winter happy hour at Eataly's Serra by Birreria and the hygge vibes were perfect for a December afternoon.

Best holiday magic in NYC #8:  Macy's at Herald Square

With the Thanksgiving Parade hosted by Macy's, this Herald Square location becomes the first place you see signs of Christmas in the city.  Known as the inventors of the modern-day visits with Santa, it's one of THE MOST magical places in the US to ring in the holiday season.  To read more about Macy's role in our Christmas traditions, read the 15 part series in Human's of NY (make sure you start with 1/15 at the bottom) or watch Miracle on 34th Street :)

In NYC, you can meet the real Santa, doesn't get any more Christmassy than that!
