Like the Finger Lakes or the Hudson Valley, Northern New Jersey has a plethora of adorable small towns to visit. From tree lined streets to old school downtowns and from tasty cafes to cute little gift shops, these small towns are the perfect place to spend a Summer Saturday. Matt and I stumbled on Rutherford in an unexpected way, but I'm so glad we found this lovely town that's a train ride or a 20 min Uber from Jersey City.
Our favorite place in Rutherford, is the most delicious bakery, Erie Coffeeshop & Bakery. The inside is darling and the food is some of the best we've had. I love the spinach feta mushroom handpie and Matt enjoys the iced coffee. Of course, we've sampled tons of their sweet pastries and love each and everyone of them, depending on what we're in the mood for that day.The downtown area is directly off the train line so it's a quick and easy walk from the station. There are shops and restaurants lining Park Ave and plenty of street parking available. We love lunch & Italian groceries from Matera's Italian Market and coffee from Rutherford Coffee Co. or Ara Coffee. If you don't partake in Erie baked goods for breakfast, the line outside Rutherford Pancake House is always halfway down the block, so it must be good!
The cute shops are perfect for gifts or window shopping. I like to peek into Goffin's Hallmark Shop, Rutherford Music Exchange, Soldato Books, Country Whimsey, Sara's Children's Boutique, Rutherford Florist, & Village Wines. Stroll down to Lincoln Park to relax in the sun and grab a snack at Top That! Donuts or Sweet Avenue Bake Shop or something a bit more healthy at be well greens. Stop in the funky costume shop, Fun Ghoul and browse flower at Park Floral Designs. If you hang around for dinner, Cafe Matisse has a beautiful dining patio.
Thanks to it's close proximity to home, we'll be happy to spend many more Saturday's exploring Rutherford, NJ. Other favorite NJ towns include Ridegewood and Ashbury Park and we'll slowly start exploring more of what our new state has to offer.
