thailand's grand palace

A city of gold and an emerald Buddha in Bangkok, Thailand

Welcome to The Royal Grand Palace!  Established in the early 1780s, the palace was home to the king, served as government offices, and housed the temple of the Emerald Buddha.  On a long-ago work trip to Bangkok, I was able to sneak away for an afternoon to explore one of Thailand's most magnificent attractions.

While every nook and cranny of the palace complex is exquisite, there are a handful of impeccable pieces of architecture that cannot be missed.  *The Demon Guardians stand guard of the Emerald Buddha, protecting from evil spirits.  *The hermit figure sits with a mortar and grinding stone, representing traditional Thai medicine.  *The golden spiral (stupa) of the Phra Siratana Chedi is covered entirely with golden mosaic.  *Covered in green and gold tiles, the Phra Mondop is the Buddhist library, housing a mother-of-pearl book cabinet and the Buddhist scripture.  *East of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, stand 8 different colored towers that represent different Buddhist concepts.  Lastly and most importantly, there is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and The Chapel of the Emerald Buddha.  *The Temple houses the Emerald Buddha, which is the most important image of Buddha in all of Thailand.  The Buddha is dressed in 3 outfit representing the 3 seasons of summer, winter, and rainy season.  *The Chapel is the most important building in the temple and is used as an ordination room for the Buddhist monks.  Now, mostly a tourist attraction or a place for devout Buddhist to visit, the Grand Palace is a golden dream in the middle of busy Bangkok.
