A Summer Saturday with Lady Liberty
After living in NYC for 3 years and visiting for the past 20+ years, I finally made it out to see the Statue of Liberty. Thanks to her welcoming presence and overall theme of inclusion and refuge, I've always been a bit obsessed with Lady Liberty. Unfortunately, my laziness kept me from figuring out how to buy a ticket, board the boat, and cruise out into the Hudson River. I pictured long lines and lots of tourists so always got my fix by riding by on the Staten Island Ferry instead. This past summer, a good friend was in town with her three kids and asked if I wanted to ferry out to Liberty Island with them. We skipped Ellis Island this time, but spent a hot summer day climbing the statue and roaming around the beautiful park. The lines were long, the sun was scorching, and there were way too many tourists, but visiting this bucket list attraction was well worth it. And the majestic views of Manhattan were the cherry on top of our adventurous day in NYC.
Complete your Summer Saturday by wandering around Battery Park when you're back on the big island. Have lunch at Battery Gardens, ride the sea glass carousal, and end the afternoon with a double-scoop Mr. Softie.
The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus
"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
'Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!' cries she
With silent lips. 'Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!'"
