magnolia season at the obelisk

There are spectacular displays of magnolia blossoms all around NYC's Central Park.  Favorites for me include, the Conservatory Garden, outside the Central Park Zoo, and around the Green at the Dene.  But one of the most incredible exhibits of magnolia blossom beauty is behind The Met and around The Obelisk/Cleopatra's Needle.  2023 was the first year I saw the blossoms in this region of the park and I was blown away by the beauty.

Built in the 1400s in Egypt, the obelisk was dedicated to Central Park in 1881.  Scholars believed that obelisks represented eternity and immortality as their long tapered shape could connect the heavens and earth.  The obelisk's journey from Cairo to Central Park is extremely fascinating and almost seems impossible.  But in early April, when the magnolias bloom, I'm happy to have this magnificent piece of history to explore.
