4th of July in the Adirondacks

Happy Birthday America!

What better way to spend the 4th than in a cabin, in the woods, alongside a beautiful lake.  Thanks to our friends and their family's camp in the Adirondacks, we were able to spend a long weekend enjoying the great outdoors in the hot summer sun.  The camp itself is a series of houses and each of the three couples on the trip were able to claim a cabin as their own.  We met up for meals at the main house each day, but there was plenty of time for activities with the group or quiet reflection on one's own.

While paddle boarding, swimming & fishing were great ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, my favorite activity at camp were the boat rides around the lake.  The lake is completely private and only those with homes along the shore can access the waters.  Our friends were fantastic tour guides and pointed out all the famous homes around the water's edge.  A favorite was Pine Tree Point, the Japanese style compound, that once belonged to the Vanderbilt family.  In the Gilded Age, east coast elite would flee from the cities to Upper St. Regis Lake and spend the summer with their families.  While the camps may have changed color or been updated for structural enhancements, most remain just as they were at the turn of the century over 100 years ago.

Upper St. Regis Lake provided the majority of our entertainment for the weekend, but the surrounding towns have much to offer a wandering tourist.  Highlights included multiple stops at Donnelly's Ice Cream, dinner at Whiteface Lodge, beer tasting at Blue Line Brewery and of course, shopping local along downtown Lake Placid.  A beautiful weekend with wonderful friends was the perfect way to kick off the dog days of summer.
