conservatory gardens wisteria season

 Central Park's Wisteria Lane

It's no secret that the Conservatory Gardens are one of my favorite areas in Central Park (in all of NYC, actually).  While the garden is one of my absolute favorites, I spend a majority of time visiting in the Spring.  Magnolia and crabapple blossoms explode in early April.  Daffodils make way for tulips, that make way for peonies.  The entire garden is alive with color in the months of April and May.  One of the more unique blooms, occurs early May, when the Wisteria Pergola bursts with flowers.

One of the best features of the Central Park website, is that you can type in a flower or tree, and it will spit out the time of year and location of that bloom within the park.  Only the Conservatory Garden will display this flowering vine but the magnitude of wisteria at the pergola more than makes up for its scarcity elsewhere in the park.  The blossoms are purple and white in color and the flowers hang in clusters that reminiscent of grapes.  The  plant is extremely fragrant and a walk under the pergola is an experience for all the senses.
