Brooklyn Botanic Garden in july

Brooklyn Botanic Garden & the July abundance

It's no secret that I love botanic gardens.  I love gardens, parks, conservatories, and especially plant themed restaurants.  Some of my favorite can be found all over the world.  But one of THE BEST botanical gardens can be found right in NYC, at Brooklyn's Botanic Garden.

The BBG is comprised of 31 different gardens and each is spectacular and beautiful in any season.  Because the gardens are so massive, I'm focusing on 4 (5) of my favorite from my July afternoon in Brooklyn.  Because I entered the garden at the Eastern Parkway entrance, I started my journey in the Osbourne Garden (#31 from the BBG website map).  I truly believe in love at first site and I was absolutely in love, as soon as I stepped through the gates.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden:  Osbourne Garden

Semi-formal Italianate garden with an annual filled fountain, wisteria pergolas and cherry & crab apple trees.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden:  Rose Garden

While the garden is in full bloom in June, there were still an array of roses on display when I visited in late July.  The beauty was so magnificent, I can only imagine what it looks like in peak season.  The roses are in formal beds through the enclosed garden, but also climb over trellises, fences and and arches throughout the space, creating a magical atmosphere for all those who enter.

To the left of the Rose Garden, just above Cherry Esplanade and to the right of Bluebell Wood, is a darling area that really shined in late July.  The end of summer stunners, coneflowers, dahlias, anemones, and mums were on full display alongside interlocking arches and a pond & fountain.  This was probably my favorite location at the BBG this day.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden:  Shakespeare Garden

Anyone that knows me, knows I am a huge fan of Shakespeare and maybe even a bigger fan of Shakespeare Gardens (Lincoln Park & Central Park has two of my favorites).  The Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Shakespeare Garden was right up there as one of the prettiest.  This English cottage style garden includes over 75 different plants mentioned in Shakespeare's stories.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden:  Lily Pool Terrace and Borders

Outside the conservatory, sits a spectacular garden with lily ponds, fountains, and an abundant perennial and annual border garden.  The lily pads were in bloom at the end of July and the late summer blooms of the borders were absolutely stunning.  I love conservatories, but have to say that the outside display was 100 times more grand than the inside displays.

I spent hours at the BBG, wandering each and every garden and taking almost 700 photos.  Only a few of the specific gardens are depicted here, but all were incredibly beautiful and unique.  Other highlights included the Herb Garden, the Japanese Garden, the Fragrance Garden, and the Bonsai Museum but I'm looking forward to Spring to experience Cherry Esplanade and Magnolia Plaza.  With the 50 degree January we're having this year (the daffodils, magnolia, and pear blossoms have already started to bud), I'm praying the blossoms are not killed as Spring in NYC is one of the most beautiful and something I look forward to all year round.
