Free Art in Chicago
Home to my favorite art museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago is no stranger to museums and art galleries. As the city of skyscrapers, the architecture in the city is art unto itself. There is so much beauty in the city and for this reason alone, it's my absolute favorite US city. There are two places in the city that offer a quick (under one hour), free, way to enjoy art and architecture, The Chicago Cultural Center and Art on the Mart (aka The Merchandise Mart).
Chicago Cultural Center
There are various events hosted at the Cultural Center, but the main attraction are the domes, specifically the Tiffany Glass dome in Preston Bradley Hall. The impressive building was originally Chicago's first public library, and extraordinary materials were used in its construction, such as marble, brass, and mother of pearl. Even if you do not attend one of the free events, just walking around the building is art.
Art on the Mart
Another incredible way to see art in Chicago, is to head to the Chicago Riverwalk after dark. The largest permanent digital art exhibit in the world, contemporary art is projected on the 2.5 acre front of the Merchandise Mart. While planning a specific evening to experience Art on the Mart is a must, the coolest part of the installation is seeing it when you least expect it...walking along Wacker Drive, riding the CTA Brown Line, or cruising by in a water taxi.
From its parks to its wall murals to its lakeside beaches, there are so many cool things to do for free in Chicago! Millennium Park & Lincoln Park are a couple more of my favorites!
