Stunning Architecture in Sydney's QVB (Queen Victoria Building)
One of the most stunning pieces of architecture in Sydney, NSW, is the beautiful Queen Victoria Building. The structure was built in the late 1800s and named for the ruling monarch at the time, Queen Victoria, on her Diamond Jubilee. Sydney was going through a major recession at the time and the Romanesque architecture was specifically chosen to employ local craftsmen in need of work. A highlighting feature of the building is the center glass dome as well as the stained glass windows that surround the façade. Originally a market place in the center of town, QVB is still a shopping destination but now the building is filled with high end retail shops and restaurants instead of shopping stalls or trade shops such as tailors or blacksmiths. I suggest breakfast at the Grounds of the City and lunch at ESQ.
Similar to malls stateside, the lists of shops and restaurants, as well as hours of operation can vary. Check out the QVB website for up to date information (or just stroll each level adoring the architecture).
