us botanic garden on the national mall

America's Botanic Garden

On one end of the National Mall, near the Capital Building, sits one of the prettiest places in all of Washington, DC.  The US Botanic Garden has incredible grounds with flowers and trees that are an abundance of color for at least 3 seasons of the year.  I visited in late April and enjoyed the bright yellow shrubs and the hundreds of tulips surrounding the Conservatory.  There are plenty of places to sit and read a book or enjoy your lunch outdoors, plus a variety of winding paths and secret corners to get lost in.  In addition to the Conservatory, the Botanic Garden consists of six different gardens plus the lawns.  The gardens include a Pollinator Garden, Kitchen Garden, Rose Garden, Regional Garden, The First Ladies Water Garden, and the Bartholdi Fountain and Garden.  It was pure joy to wander and explore.

Inside the Conservatory is bright and beautiful.  The main entrance leads you to the most picturesque place in the entire building, the Garden Court.  Plants and light and wonderful smells flood the two symmetrical pools that flank the entrance.

The Conservatory path leads you through the other houses and gardens, including The Tropics, World Deserts, Hawaii plant house, the Mediterranean Garden, Primeval Garden, and the Orchid house,  just to name a few.  All are magical and beautiful in their own way.  Follow the path or make your own way, zig-zagging through lush landscapes and various regions.  Each room is a delight for all the senses.

Once outside again, I admired the Rose Garden (just a few blooms on this sunny April day!) and then spent some time photographing the spring tulips.  Plants and flowers are my favorite, no matter the season, but there is just something about tulips in the spring that gives me an abundance of joy.

Some of my other favorite Botanic Gardens and Conservatories can be found in Chicago, Brooklyn, Rochester, Sydney, and Naples, FL.
