Summer Bounty in NYC
May through October, I live for Farmers Markets. There are markets big and small that pop up all over NYC, the 5 boroughs, and the surrounding cities. Each bring a flavor of the season and the specialty of the local farmers in NY, CT, and NJ. But the farmers market that blows away all other farmers markets, is the biggest and best at Union Square. The Union Square Green Market runs year round on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday and is open from 8am to 6pm. While I was used to waking early on a Saturday morning, just to peruse the stalls in Chicago's Green City Market, this mammoth market was a real treat. I can decide to shop on a random Wednesday, mid-day and still pack my market bag with fresh produce and local flowers. In a city that has everything, Union Square Green Market is one of the best surprises.
Other parks in the city have their own charm, even if they don't include the best Farmers Market on the east coast :) I love Central Park in all seasons and enjoy spending time in The Battery, at Gantry Plaza State Park, and all the teeny parks of Brooklyn.
