NH & ME Road Trip

 New England in the Fall

In the months of June through October, New England is my favorite area of the world.  I honestly love it more than Paris and St. Maarten and Sydney combined.  The summers are stuffed with beach filled days and cool nights by the fire.  Fall is the most beautiful collection of colors and textures.  My friend Kim and I love New England and have taken various trips to the region to soak up the beauty.  Years ago, she lived in Boston, and I met up with her for a road trip north through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.  I had never been to New Hampshire previously, so it was a great mini-road trip to check off another state from my list.

We posed for photos outside the welcome center in Seabrook, NH, but my list of to-dos were in the quirky city of Portsmouth, NH.

Breakfast/Lunch:  The Friendly Toast, The Goods, The Juicery, La Maison Navarre, Elephantine Bakery

Dinner:  Green Elephant Vegetarian Bistro, Flatbread Company, Cure, Cava, Black Trumpet

Drinks & Dessert:  Portsmouth Brewery, Fezziwig's Food & Fountain, Ceo's Gelato Bistro, Annabelle's Natural Ice cream

Shop:  LIT Boutique, Inside Out, Sault, Gus & Ruby Letterpress, Serendipity, Pickwick's Mercantile, Portsmouth Book & Bar,  Bliss Boutique, Portsmouth Goods, Sea Bags

Tour:  The entire downtown historic district is on the national register of historic places,
Strawberry Bank Museum and Gardens, Street Art Murals, African Burying Grounds and Memorial,
Prescott Park, Pierce Island, Four Tree Island, Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse and a Harbor Cruise, Governor John Langdon's House

After cruising through New Hampshire, we were headed for the Maine boarder.  Welcome to Kittery, Maine, one of the oldest cities in the entire state.  First stop, the candy heaven of Yummies!  Kim and I are obsessed with candy so this was a very important moment in our New England road trip :)  After our sugar coma subsided, it was onto the next tourist site.  Kittery highlights include the Premium Outlet Mall and the New England shopping staple, The Kittery Trading Post.  When in Maine, it's a requirement to enjoy a Lobster Roll.  We chowed down on dive bar lobster rolls but Robert's Maine Grill and Market is the most adorable lighthouse and restaurant.  This is what New England looks like in my mind.

This was a quick day trip up route 95 (Boston to Kittery is only an hour and a half drive, not including a stop in NH), but I'd love to spend more time in Portsmouth and other NH towns.  Portland, ME is still on my list of must visit cities as well as the stunning national and state parks in the region.  See more of my New England travel to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, Newport, Ogunquit, Boston, Vermont, & Yale!  Fall is here, and it's New England's time to shine.
